The River Course

The River Course at the Rio Mar Resort may be a resort course, but it is certainly not your run-of-the-mill resort course.  For starters, the The clubhouse at the Rio Mar Country Club is an exceptional facility that offers a nicely appointed golf shop, locker rooms for both men and women with saunas, whirlpools & steam rooms(!), banquet facilities and two exceptional restaurants - The Iguana Club one offering lunch and light dinner fare and the Grille Room offering four star dining.

Practice facilities at the Rio Mar Country Club feature a targeted grass range, large putting green and a short game practice area with chipping and sand bunkers.  Golf carts feature club protectors, ball & club washer, cooler with ice and ProView GPS systems. The course is well marked, also - with 100/150/200 yard blocks in the center of the fairway, sprinkler heads marked, a 150 yard stake in the center of the fairway and tee boxes marked. All yardages are measured to the center of the greens.

This Greg Norman layout presents yardages between 5088 and 6902 with slope and course ratings between 120/69.8 and 135/74.5 on four sets of Bermuda grass tees. The Bermuda fairways are immaculately maintained and as would be expected, the Bermuda rough is always a challenge. Greens are ample and fast on this course with mild sloping and subtle transitions and breaks.

The first three holes on the River course is a good set and a good indicator of what is to come here. The par 4 # 1 is an impressive par four dogleg left with trouble in the form of natural area on the left and bunkers on the right. The fairway is wide enough here, but bunkers and rough beacon errant shots off the tee. The second hole is a beautiful par 4 with water on the right at the approach to a very well protected green, and the third hole is a classic par 3 over water into the warm winds that blow over the course from the Atlantic.

There are 57 bunkers and 14 holes featuring water in one form or another on this Norman design. Each bunker is strategically placed to come into play either off the tee or at the approach. Many greens were heavily bunkered which made for an intimidating round.  The entire course is beautifully landscaped and void of on-course residences (although the Wyndham offers a very impressive variety of condominium ownership at Rio Mar Resort). The mountains of the nearby El Yunque National Park are a distraction on many holes and the general beauty of this Caribbean course can reek havoc with the senses, forcing you to concentrate in order to score well here.
