Barbados Golf Club (246) 428-8463
Island Golf Course Review
Originally opened 25 years ago in Durants, Barbados, the Barbados Golf Club was re-designed by Ron Kirby in 1999 and re-opened in 2000 with acclamations to its friendliness,
beauty, and challenge by players of all levels of golf. It is officially sanctioned by the PGA European Tour and was an official destination of the tour in 2002.
The heart of Barbados Golf Club is its beautiful clubhouse, overlooking the course. The restaurant, bar and patio which are open 7 days a week offer picturesque views of the 9th
and 18th greens which share a nicely landscaped water feature. The golf shop offers an extensive selection of durty free golf equipment and clothing, and locker rooms with
showers are provided for both men and women. Events and outings for groups of up to 150 are welcomed by the professional clubhouse/dining staff.
Lessons are available for groups and individuals with the local golf pro and the course offers large practice greens for putting and chipping. Warm up nets are provided in lieu of a
driving range. Shoes, clubs (Cobra), pull carts, electric trollies and golf carts are available for rent. Proper golf attire is required here as well as soft spikes.
This par 72, 6700-yard course winds its way through rolling hills and two lakes providing water on five holes. Stately mature trees line gently undulating fairways and tropical trade
winds sweep over coral waste areas and 39 well-placed bunkers. There are 4 sets of tees, each offering a different challenge. The tips play 6,649 yards and have a slope/rating
of 128/73.5. The middle tees play 6,285 yards and 5,810 yards (124/71.0 and 119/68.9) and the forward tees play 5,420 yards (123/71.8). Tee boxes and sprinkler heads are
marked to the center of the green while yardage plates in the center of the fairways at 50/100/150 and 200 yards are measured to the front of the green.
Barbados Golf Club is very well maintained with nicely conditioned Bermuda tees, greens, fairways and rough. The greens are ample, very fair and provide a nice challenge with
some greens being raised and/or multi-leveled and most sloping back to front. There is a nice mix of wide-open, uphill, downhill and undulating fairways. The wind is always in
play on this course and can be quite gusty, forcing players to choose carefully on approach shots.
One of the Caribbean’s true gems, Barbados Golf Club is a beautiful, challenging, yet pleasurable tract located in tropical surroundings only minutes from the airport and a short
distance from the cruise port. The club offers memberships to locals and overseas visitors and daily fees are reasonable for a course of this stature. Barbados Golf Club is an
ideal island course that should not be missed!
