The clubhouse at the Rio Mar Country Club is an exceptional facility that offers a nicely appointed golf shop, locker rooms for both men and women with saunas, whirlpools &
steam rooms(!), banquet facilities and two exceptional restaurants - The Iguana Club one offering lunch and light dinner fare and the Grille Room offering four star dining.
Practice facilities at the Rio Mar Country Club feature a targeted grass range, large putting green and a short game practice area with chipping and sand bunkers. Golf carts
feature club protectors, ball and club washer, coolers with ice and ProView GPS systems. The course is marked erratically - with 100/150/200 yard blocks in the center of the
fairway on some holes and a150 yard stake in the center of the fairway. All yardages are measured to the center of the green.
The Ocean Course
Designed by George and Tom Fazio, the Ocean Course at Rio Mar Country Club is the elder of the two courses on property and plays only slightly easier than the River Course. In
fact, the slope for the forward tees is higher than the River Course, while the back tees carry a slightly lower or even slope. Yardage (slope/rating) for the back tees is 6716 yards
(130/73.7), the two middle sets are 6297 yards (71.3/130) and 5946 yards (69.7/128), and the forward tees play 5327 yards (71.8/125).
The Bermuda fairways are immaculately maintained and as would be expected and the Bermuda rough is lush and always a challenge. Greens are ample on this course with
interesting sloping and serious transitions and breaks. Most greens on the Ocean Course are raised and are challenging - so bring your best putter.
Considered amongst the finest golf courses on the island, the Ocean Course at Rio Mar Country Club has a classic “Caribbean” parkland layout . Fairways have ample landing
area and are lined with beautiful stands of various palm species and other native trees and shrubs. Forty-six nicely designed bunkers are placed strategically along the fairways
and in front of or around the greens. Water comes into play on eleven holes and, in some cases, is hard to spot in front of greens until you are very close. Pay attention to the hole
description on the GPS before you plan your approach.
The Ocean Course features many doglegs. In fact, the first three holes are dogleg left, dogleg left and dogleg right. On most turns, you will find bunkers, natural wetlands, trees, or
water awaiting an errant tee shot. The course also features some of the finest par five’s we’ve played - long, winding and just plain fun. Wind will factor in on most holes, but
none more so than the signature 16th par 3 that plays along the ocean. As if the beautiful surf and palm trees are not enough of a distraction, this long par three is guarded by
bunkers - everywhere, it seems! And the crosswind roars off of the ocean forcing you to shoot far to the left as your ball will be carried right. It’s not hard to see why this hole has
been voted one of the best par 3’s in the Caribbean.
The Wyndham Rio Mar Resort is definitely a must stay & play when visiting Puerto Rico for a golf vacation. The incredible variety of accommodation offered by the resort, the two
beautiful golf courses, the wonderful amenities and its premium location on the island, make for a perfectly unforgettable experience.
